Jeanine-what a great explanation of the purpose of the law.Nice to know that we have grace that offers us life since we can't be perfect by works. Thanks for putting it all in perspective!

Thanks for your input Rabbi. First, I would like to say that I never said that we don't have to keep His commandments. Look through the article and you won't find it. A true believer in Christ does indeed keep the commandments. But the point that I was trying to make is that we are not SAVED by doing good works, or keeping the commandments.

I would also like to point out that the verse says, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the law". That is the curse. Yes the penalty is the result of the curse, but the curse is on anyone who doesn't perfectly obey the law. I don't know how to say it any clearer. Romans 3:28 says, "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law." Obeying the law can't justify anyone before God, and I would be misleading people if they thought that they could somehow work their way to heaven. I hear people say all the time, "I'm going to heaven because I'm a good person". The bible teaches quite the opposite. Romans 3 says that there is no one good, and no one seeks for God. Scripture is clear all over that being right with God comes through faith. I also pointed out in this article that true faith is indeed followed by repentance. A repentant heart seeks to obey God. A true believer in Christ demonstrates fruit in his or her life. If someone does not have fruit of repentance, then it calls into question their salvation. Romans 8:2 says, "For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death." How are we set free? We are set free through the Spirit; we are not set free through the law.  I completely agree with you in that we show our love to Jesus by obeying Him.  An obedient life is a result of true saving faith.

I hope that clears up any questions you have. Thank you for your concern.

Hi Rabii Stanley,

I must say that I'm saddened by your response. It makes me wonder where you stand on theology. I wrote this article on how the law points our sin, showing us that we need a savior. The bible is clear that we are saved by faith alone. Because I focused on this aspect in this article, you have determined that I don't believe in obeying the commandments, which is a huge presumption on your part. I have stated up above that a true believer is obedient. Someone who claims to be a believer, yet does not have fruit in his or her life calls into question his or her salvation. I believe I already said this.

James 2:24 says, "You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;"

This is the point I made earlier. Works are a result of true faith.

As far as keeping the Sabbath or mixing fibers, those things are not commanded of us anymore. Here are some verses to consider.

Colossians 2:16

Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day--

Romans 3:20

because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:28

For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

Romans 3:31

Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.

# Romans 6:14

For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Romans 6:13-15 (in Context) Romans 6 (Whole Chapter)

# Romans 6:15

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be!

Romans 7:6

But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

Romans 10:4

For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Galatians 2:16

nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

Galatians 2:21

"I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly."

Galatians 3:1-7

1You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified?

2This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

3Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?

4Did you suffer so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain?

5So then, does He who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith?

6Even so Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

7Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.

So to summarize where I stand, I believe that the bible teaches that we are saved by faith, not through works of the law. True saving faith results in obedience.

There are ceremonial, levitical, and civic laws in the old testament that we are no longer bound to. You asked if I mixed fibers. I did read about this in Leviticus 19, but I also noted that in the same chapter men are not trim their beards. Have you done this? These rules were not rules that were meant to be extended to us today. I hope I have not offended you, and I sincerely hope that you understand that I love the Lord with all my heart and seek to live an obedient life. I am holding what scriptures teaches at the forefront of where I stand.
